Book Bank

What is the Book Bank?

The Book Bank Program promotes literacy by acquiring new and gently used books and other educational materials for distribution to schools, libraries and community organizations throughout the island of Jamaica. It places a special emphasis on reading materials for children as a means of instilling the love of reading at a very early age.

Why is it necessary?

The ability to read is the most essential component of literacy. The Jamaica Teacher's Association states "many children face significant difficulties because of their inability to read. The proportion of children entering primary school without the necessary skills to begin primary education and the literacy rate at the end of grade six are cause for concern."

How does it work?

Books are acquired from individuals, book drives, publisher overstock and from retail outlets throughout the United States.

Recipients are selected from a pool of needy facilities and shipped at no charge from our South Florida location.
